interdisciplinary co-operation

38% improvement in the interdisciplinary co-operation at Koninklijke Visio Het Loo Erf (intensive rehabilitation for blind or partially sighted).

Koninklijke Visio Het Loo Erf has, with the Lean Six Sigma methodology, improved their interdisciplinary co-operation in diagnostics by 38%, through clear agreements and effective communication about cross functional subjects.

Problem

While multidisciplinary co-operation at the Koninklijke Visio Het Loo Erf has already been in place, interdisciplinary co-operation was limited. Due to existing overlap among disciplines, clients were asked the same question more than once and sometimes superfluous questions were asked. The tuning between employees of the different disciplines was not optimal during the investigation phase. Because of that important information was overlooked and the client was tasked double. This cost the organisation not only time and effort, but also caused the client to lose faith in the quality. They wanted to change that!

Analysis

With the help of the interdisciplinary revalidation model of Koninklijke Visio and several studies in this theme in the Healthcare sector we developed a measurement tool for interdisciplinary co-operation. Professionals from 8 different disciplines used this tool to test the level of discipline-transcending work. The result was a score of only 3.4 out of 6. There was room for improvement! The main cause came forward: it was not formulated explicitly what themes (parts of diagnostics) are actually discipline-transcending and how you could research these together and tune collaboration.

Results

Within 6 months we were able to improve interdisciplinary co-operation with 38% (a score of 4.7 vs. 3.4) , by going deep into discipline transcending themes and making concrete agreements about who does what with the topics during the diagnostic phase and also through alignment of the discussion protocol. The professionals experience the multidisciplinary discussion about the diagnostics now as a constructive conversation. On top of that, diagnostic meetings are finished much quicker now, saving valuable times for the professionals and for the clients.
